Refined Interiors

With a master’s degree in architecture and a gift for human connection, the Houston-based designer approaches each house he designs with both precision and profound empathy. Grounded in classical principles of balance and proportion, Johnston’s interiors are celebrated for their crisp lines, tailored details, and timeless elegance. Yet within this architectural rigor, he introduces unexpected, artful moments that infuse every space with originality, vitality, and modern livability.

In his debut book, handsomely packaged with gilded edges, Johnston unveils eight recently completed residences-many never before published-that embody his aesthetic. Spanning a range of styles, periods, and cultural influences, these homes reveal Johnston’s rare gift for weaving diverse inspirations into richly layered, harmonious spaces. More than just a portfolio, the book invites readers to view these projects through Johnston’s creative lens. He shares insights on the tension between contrast and cohesion, the beauty found in imperfection, and the role of theatricality in elevating everyday life. Whether exploring dramatic spaces for entertaining, the interplay between daytime and nighttime rooms, or why every interior benefits from a touch of black, Johnston distills timeless lessons that resonate with both design enthusiasts and professionals.
