Biltmore House

George W. Vanderbilt created one of the greatest self-sustaining American country estates of the late nineteenth century-at its center, Richard Morris Hunt’s splendid 250-room French Renaissance château. Beyond the acres of gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and the imposing castle exterior lies one of the most notable private collections of fine and decorative art in the nation. Discover the wealth of treasures assembled in the historic rooms: paintings by Monet, Renoir, Sargent, and Whistler; Renaissance tapestries; rare books; and exquisite French and English furniture.

Offering readers a glimpse into the design and furnishing of the North Carolina manse during the 1890s, the book explores Vanderbilt’s relationships with leading artists, art dealers, and decorating firms from Tiffany & Co. in New York to Allard & Sons in Paris. Step inside the Winter Garden, Banquet Hall, Tapestry Gallery, and Library, recounted in Vanderbilt’s own words. Visit the family’s private apartments, with Rococo decors drawn in sumptuous detail, as well as the industrially equipped kitchens and the sculpture-filled formal terraces. Unlocked drawers and conserved canvases reveal spectacular provenances reaching to the canals of Venice and the port of Canton (Guangzhou). Together these luxurious spaces and remarkable objects tell a story both highly personal and representative of a social milieu. Paired with superb new photography taken specially for the book, they add depth and sparkle to the history of a glittering era.
